Wireless Sensor Technologies in Disaster Monitoring: Learning from how Nature does it.

Chairman, INCOSE Natural Systems Working Group ,
- Member, past chair Wireless Avionics Community of Practice, NASA Engineering and Safety Center
- Retired NASA engineer of numerous wireless spaceflight sensors and inspection technologies

  Abstract

Mr. Studor will discuss past applications, user needs and sources for wireless active and passive sensor technology and how they can apply to natural disaster monitoring. In addition, he will discuss a challenge as to what can be learned from natural systems, living and non-living, to derive advanced concepts and technologies for the delivery and application of the wireless sensors. George has initiated numerous wireless sensor packages for stand-alone and networked use on the NASA Space Shuttle and International Space Station as well as triggered numerous new technology developments and aerospace applications for wireless sensors. For instance, his “Fly-by-Wireless” initiative are being incorporated into large commercial aircraft in the coming years. Contents of “Fly-by-Wireless” and “Passive Wireless Sensor Technologies” public websites will be examined, from which he will begin to derive various concepts for application of wireless sensors to natural disaster monitoring will be explored: for prediction, monitoring during the event, and post event assessment. He will provide examples of how Natural Systems have already provided the basis for new sensing and delivery solutions as well as issue a challenge to take advantage of the growth, world-wide, in knowledge of and ability to mimic Natural Systems when exploring solutions for sensing, delivery and recovery of natural disaster monitoring sensors.
