CANEUS/EADS/NASA INTENT FOR COOPERATION ON “FLY-BY-WIRELESS” FOR AEROSPACE VEHICLES

June 29, 2007
Le Bourget, PARIS AIRSHOW 2007

Representatives from CANEUS, EADS Corporate and NASA met at the Paris Air
Show on 19the June to lay the foundation for an project on Fly-by-Wireless for Aerospace Vehicles" and International Wireless On-board Aircraft Working Group to identify and explore areas of mutual international interest.  The high-level meeting helped identify and formulate the details of a joint, international partnership including (a) opportunities and priorities for collaborative activities, (b) international collaboration infrastructure, (c) requirements for member participation and (d) project administration.

Several other international companies including: Embraer from Brazil, Boeing and Honeywell from USA, Bombardier from Canada, as well the technology providers such as the SME’s and university laboratories, are expected to join the working Group and the collaborative project.

Fly-by-Wireless and Small Spacecraft Developments

During the joint deliberations at the Paris Air Show Senior EADS management representatives confirmed their desire for formulate international collaborations on specific MNT-development topics such as “Fly-by-Wireless”. The parties expressed common interests and technical capabilities in sensors, wireless technologies for aircraft and spacecraft applications, reliability of sensors and devices, small satellites for civilian and defense applications, and related technologies.

International cooperation involving unique technical capabilities:

Individually, NASA, EADS and other members of the International Working Group and the project have each had a long history of successful development of Micro-Nano Technologies (MNT) for space, aeronautics and defense applications. CANEUS’ unique approach of creating smoothly functioning technology development pipelines by putting together international consortia aimed at new MNT-based aerospace systems is attractive to NASA, EADS and other international members.

CANEUS will spearhead the implementation of international cooperative efforts that range from the administering the International Working Group and the mutually identified collaborative pilot projects. Following the Paris Air Show meeting, CANEUS will work with other partners to determine the composition, schedule, and scope of these joint project activities in consultation with NASA, EADS and other partners.

CANEUS is a worldwide organization serving the needs of the aeronautics, space and defense communities by fostering the coordinated, international development of MNT (Micro-Nano- Technologies) for aerospace applications. As a "hands on" organization, CANEUS is focused on the practical aspects of transitioning MNT rapidly and efficiently from the concept to the aerospace system level. In achieving this goal, CANEUS brings together technology developers, aerospace end-users, governmental policy makers and investors from across the world. www.caneus.org
