CANEUS / NASA Workshop succeeds in creating international partnerships

Dear Colleagues,

As I was preparing to send the newsletter summarizing the CANEUS / NASA Workshop held on March 27-28, we just received this morning, the following e-mail from one of the participants. I would like to share it with you:

“I wish to personally thank you for the invitation to attend your "Fly by Wireless" workshop at the World Wide RFID Conference in Grapevine, Texas. It was very informative and provided the opportunity to meet with key personnel from organizations that share the wireless vision for the future of aerospace.

As a result of this meeting we were able to discuss possible alliances with several companies and establish relationships with potential OEM customers. As mentioned during my presentation, we have a program in process with a major OEM to develop a wireless aircraft that includes Fly-by-Wire. Based on the preliminary discussions with at least three of the OEMs at the meeting, they also expressed interest in cooperating on similar wireless data bus development programs. We are also interested in participating in one of the NASA partnership programs that were presented during the dinner talk.

In addition to the benefits of attending the CANEUS/NASA workshop, I was able to break away long enough to visit some of the booths in the exhibit hall. Based on my limited discussions and observations there appears to be a possibility for technology transfer from the commercial RFID sector to wireless aerospace applications.

Below is a list of organizations where we have set-up tentative follow-on meetings as a result of this workshop.

Joint Ventures Contacts
Honeywell
University of Minho -- Portugal
United Technologies
BAE
Goodrich
Agency for Brazilian Industrial Development

OEM Customer Contacts
Boeing Military
Airbus
Sikorsky
Bombardier
Embraer

We will contact you for a more complete understanding of the partnership programs offered at NASA. Thanks again for organizing and sponsoring this very successful event. Please ensure we are included in any future wireless workshop invitations.

Best Regards,

The CANEUS / NASA Workshop opened many eyes to one fact: need for international partnership and cooperation to minimize cables and connectors across the aerospace industry by providing reliable, lower cost, and higher performance alternatives for a vehicle/program's life-cycle. The workshop was held in Grapevine, Texas on March 27-28th, in response to the CANEUS initiative to establish an international forum, through the CANEUS Organization, on wireless alternatives and new innovations such as no-power sensor-tag systems, which precipitate cooperation and partnerships between industry/government customers, system innovators and technology developers.

Over 200 participants representing Canada, US, Europe, Brazil, Japan and other countries met in Grapevine, Texas to identify and enable key partnerships toward implementing “Fly-by-Wireless” in aerospace vehicles where the market shows the highest payback; develop project plans for technology maturation, and put in place the architecture and infrastructure that supports incremental implementation of anticipated technological advancements.

Participants in one session initiated discussion to establish  “Aircraft Wireless Working Group (International), under the auspices of CANEUS”. The Working Group mission is to explore international level solutions to the barriers to on-board aircraft wireless implementation especially related to applications, requirements, and spectrum allocation.

The CAW-WG partial membership include, AVSI, United Technologies (Chris Van Buiten), EADS (Jean-Pierre Daniel), Bombardier Aerospace (Tim Smith), Boeing Commercial Airplanes (Dave Kirkland), NASA – Glenn Research Center (Jim Griner), Boeing Phantom Works (Ryan Carlson), Honeywell (Vic Thomas, Eric Lautenschlager), Embraer, Brazil (Henrique Alves). Organizations interested to join the Group, please contact: CANEUS Chairman, Milind Pimprikar at mp@caneus.org or 514-499-3959
