Dear
Colleagues,
After almost a
year with the CANEUS Organization I am stepping down as
Director of Communications. In my time here I have been
fortunate to have the opportunity to correspond with most
of you and to meet many of you in person. From CANEUS 2006
Conference preparations to the Swedish Royal Visit to CANEUS
NPS Inc., I have witnessed firsthand your dedication and
extraordinary efforts in everything we do. Each and every one
of you contributes something different, yet equally valuable,
to bring CANEUS the success it currently
enjoys.
I am taking this
leave of absence in order to follow my passion for
communications by pursuing a Master’s in Journalism. I hope to
apply this education to scientific journalism, and to focus on
rendering scientific and technical research (such as micro and
nanotechnologies!) available and accessible to the reading
public. In this light, my career will be furthering the
objectives of CANEUS by promoting awareness of MNT and
informing the public of their immense
capabilities.
You may notice a
slight gap in our communications in the coming weeks. For
example, we may experience minor delays in website updates and
the Week in Review until our Montréal headquarters can
regroup again. Rest assured that we are currently striving to
build a core team that is stronger than ever, and will return
shortly with full force!
Thank you all
for giving me the opportunity to work alongside you. The
CANEUS Organization is a continuously evolving organism, and I
look forward to following its progress in the coming
months!
Yours
sincerely,
Marit

Organization

- Aerospace
leaders representing several aspects of the
industry continue to sign up for the CANEUS/NASA
Fly-by-Wireless Workshop, which will be held in
Grapevine, TX, USA, from 27-28 March 2007, as part of RFID
World 2007. Confirmed participants from NASA,
Boeing, Airbus, Sandia National Labs, Goodrich,
Invocon, Sikorsky Aircraft, and many other
organizations, will offer unique contributions, making
the Fly-by-Wireless Workshop a
one-of-a-kind, international
forum. One week remains until
submissions for papers, demonstrations, and/or posters
are due on 22 February 2007.

- CANEUS
NPS Inc. is pleased to be developing a strong relationship
with our partners at Israeli Aerospace Industries and its
subsidiary, ELTA. Together, we are teaming up to develop
small satellite capabilities for both Israel and Canada. As
this partnership evolves, we hope to establish a unique
joint venture to create a new branch of the IAI as a
Canadian subsidiary. This collaboration is but one facet of
the strong relationship CANEUS enjoys with its colleagues in
Israel, and we look forward to expanding still further on
that relationship.

Project
Chair of the CANEUS NanoComposite Materials Project, Dr.
Robab Safa-Bakhsh of Boeing, has developed a novel approach
to oversee the end-to-end development of this important
project! Inspired by the unique CANEUS approach, this
exciting initiative unites contributors from Boeing, the
United States Air Force and numerous university research
laboratories who will oversee the entire project pipeline.
From formulation through characterization, and finally to
the actual development and manufacturing stages of the novel
nanocomposite materials, this collaborative model will
certainly serve as an example to projects
worldwide.
CANEUS
Small Satellite Working Group meeting in Littleton, CO to help
create International Standards
CANEUS
has initiated an important step in the evolution of the small
satellite industry, namely, the second meeting of the
CANEUS-founded Small Satellite Industry!
As
a global non-profit membership organization, the Small
Satellite Working Group aims to mitigate risk collectively for
all participants by investigating the various business models
for technology validation, satellite constellations, and
launch on demand.
Taking
place at the Littleton, Colorado headquarters of
MicroSat Systems Inc. from 8-9 March 2007, the meeting
will build upon the foundation established at the Group’s
first meeting in October, focusing specifically on
international collaborations within the small satellite
industry. It will also serve to identify and formalize the
diverse needs of its members.
Several
high-level speakers have already been confirmed, including
presentations
from our partners at DDR&E and C-ORS. In particular, the Working
Group is honoured to welcome a Keynote Address from Colonel
Tom Doyne of the US Air Force Research Laboratory entitled
“Responsive Space Missions Through NATO Countries”.
Colonel Doyne was instrumental in developing the current small
satellite standards for the United
States.
We
are now on the brink of a major breakthrough in the small
satellite industry, and this meeting represents a crucial step
towards establishing international standards. Participants
will have the invaluable opportunity to participate
in cutting-edge technical discussions, while also determining
the future direction of the small satellite
industry.
By actively
participating in creating standards, stakeholders can
influence important industry trends. Companies engaged in
current industry dialogue can decrease manufacturing costs,
increase reliability and productivity, and enjoy increased
access to customers, end-users, and the global
market.
