The scope of the Micro-Energetic Pilot Project focuses on novel materials for energy applications and proposes to guide the discussion and development with 2 focused applications:
- Novel material for the electrical micro generation
- Nano based energetic material for advanced energetic systems.
Getting a sufficient amount of work/power in millimeter scale devices has been a nettlesome challenge since the birth of the MEMS concept in the 1980's. Great advances in electronic technology have led to the proliferation of portable electronic devices. The progress made on the communication technology as well as the availability of COTS led to the dissemination of new miniature smart objects and vehicles such as spy micro vehicles, safe and instrumented munition, nanosatellites, robotic devices, and so on. All of these systems require safe, light, compact, and robust small scale:
- electrical power module to communicate and compute,
- and energetic micro systems to propel and actuate
Unfortunately, the technology and systems available for powering micro objects and vehicles are not equally advanced. Today, there is an urgent need for revolutionary technologies/materials compatible with MEMS that could produce high power densities in packages. In this context, nano based material can contribute to revolutionary improvements in electrical power MEMS and can lead to highly integrated micro energetic systems.
